Excavation Operator
Position Overview
MetronCS Commercial Services is seeking a skilled Excavation Operator to operate heavy equipment for site preparation, trenching, grading, and earthwork on commercial construction projects. You'll operate excavators, loaders, and other equipment to safely and accurately prepare sites for foundation work, utility installation, and final grading. This is a hands-on role requiring technical skill and attention to accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate excavators, backhoes, loaders, and other heavy equipment for site preparation
- Perform trenching for utility lines (water, sewer, electrical, gas) with precision to depth and grade specifications
- Conduct site grading and slope work according to plans and specifications
- Perform fill placement and compaction under supervision of foreman/superintendent
- Operate equipment for material handling and debris movement on site
- Maintain and perform basic maintenance on equipment to ensure operational readiness
- Follow site safety protocols and conduct equipment safety inspections
- Communicate with crew and supervision regarding site conditions and work progress
- Locate and avoid underground utilities using electronic locating equipment
- Operate equipment in confined spaces and challenging site conditions safely
- Maintain accurate logs of equipment hours and site work performed
- Follow traffic control plans and site access restrictions
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of heavy equipment operation experience
- Proficiency operating excavators, backhoes, and/or loaders
- Strong understanding of site grading, utility trenching, and earthwork practices
- Ability to read and interpret site plans and specifications
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel between project sites
- Strong commitment to safety and awareness of equipment hazards
- High school diploma or equivalent; trade certification preferred
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with restaurant or commercial site preparation
- Heavy Equipment Operator certification
- Knowledge of utility location and underground utility protocols
- Experience with surveying instruments or laser grading systems
Certifications Required
Valid commercial driver's license required. Heavy Equipment Operator certification or equivalent hands-on experience required. CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
Ability to work on active construction sites in varying weather conditions, operating heavy equipment for extended periods. Must be able to sit in equipment cab for extended periods, communicate clearly with crew, and respond quickly to changing site conditions. Full PPE compliance including hard hat, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots required.
